1) Can I afford to prep? Can you afford NOT to?!! It doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. You may end up spending that if you choose, but it can be over YEARS.
2) How do I start? Start by buying a few extra items you normally buy, when you go to the grocery store; things your family already eats and start building a surplus. While you're at it, keep those plastic pop bottles and food grade buckets and fill them with water. Find a nice out of the way spot to store them. Maybe throw some plain bleach in it so you don't have a science experiment when you go to use it.
3) How much prep should I aim for? Start with 72 Hours worth. If you can survive the first 72 hours of an ordeal, your chances of surviving much longer go up dramatically. Then move to a weeks worth. Then a month. Then 3 months. Then 6 months. Then a year. If you get to a years worth of supplies, you've already figured a bunch of this stuff out.
4) If I want guns, which ones should I buy? Ultimately you'll want to have a battle rifle (semi-auto in 5.56, 7.62), shotgun (12gu), hunting rifle (bolt action .270, 7mm, .308) and a .22 for small game.
5) How much ammo do I need? Have at least 1000 rounds for each rifle. That'll keep you going a while. Practice ammo is on top of that, ideally. Practice lots. It won't just make you better, it'll make you safer too.
6) What are some good books to get me started? Emergency by Neil Strauss, (lit my fire BIG TIME!!), Lights Out by Ted Koppel (told me I wasn't crazy and if I prepped for an EMP, I'd be doing well by my family), Countdown to Preparedness by Jim Cobb (super-simple starting points), The Disaster Preparedness Handbook by Arthur T. Bradley (still my go-to reference manual). If you start with these books, you'll be well on your way.
